Foundation

Learner lessons

Build car control, observation and road awareness, starting at a level that suits your experience.

Best for: complete beginners and developing learners who want a steady weekly rhythm.

Automatic

Automatic lessons

Learn in an automatic, with no clutch or manual gear changes to manage. Focus on observation, positioning and planning.

Best for: learners who prefer automatic cars or find manual controls distracting.

Focused

Test preparation

Bring together observation, manoeuvres, independent driving and “show me, tell me” vehicle safety questions. Mock-test practice helps identify what still needs work.

Best for: learners with an upcoming test, previous attempts or lessons taken elsewhere.

Accelerated

Intensive tuition

Ask about lessons closer together if that suits your schedule. The plan depends on your current ability and instructor availability; a shorter timetable does not guarantee a pass or a test date.

Best for: learners able to commit regular time and absorb feedback between longer sessions.

No pressure

Refresher lessons

Return after a break or practise specific situations such as parking, busy junctions or unfamiliar roads.

Best for: qualified or returning drivers who want patient, targeted practice.

Post-test

Motorway confidence

Practise joining and leaving, lane discipline, safe following distances and planning ahead at higher speeds.

Best for: full-licence holders who want supported practice on motorways.

Manual or automatic?

Manual or automatic?

Think about the car you expect to drive and the controls you feel comfortable learning.

Full flexibility

Manual

Learn clutch control and gear selection, and pass a test that lets you drive both manual and automatic cars.

  • Wider vehicle choice after passing
  • More coordination to master
  • Useful if you expect to drive a manual
Simpler controls

Automatic

Focus on observation and road planning without clutch or manual gear changes, with an automatic-only licence after passing.

  • Fewer controls to coordinate
  • Often calmer in stop-start traffic
  • Licence limited to automatic vehicles

Lesson questions.

Practical answers for getting started. Guidance checked against GOV.UK on 11 September 2026; follow the linked official pages for changes.

Can I ask about manual and automatic lessons?

Yes. Include your transmission preference and postcode when enquiring; H&H will confirm the options currently available in your area.

Which areas do you cover?

Send your pickup postcode with your enquiry. We’ll confirm whether lessons are available at your location.

Can I request collection from home, work or college?

Yes. Share the pickup point you need when enquiring; H&H will confirm whether that arrangement is available before you book.

How many lessons will I need?

There is no legal minimum number of lessons. Everyone learns at a different pace, so we’ll discuss your progress rather than promise a pass in a fixed number of hours. Read the GOV.UK guidance.

What do I need before my first lesson?

You need a valid provisional licence to learn. Most people can start driving a car at 17, although exceptions apply. Bring your licence and any glasses or contact lenses you need for driving. Check the official learner requirements.

Can I practise between lessons?

Private practice can help reinforce what you’ve learnt. Your supervisor must meet the legal requirements, including being at least 21 and having held an appropriate full licence for at least three years. The car must be correctly insured and display L plates. Read the full private-practice rules before setting off.

Can a learner drive on a motorway?

In Great Britain, learners can only use motorways with an approved driving instructor in a dual-control car. You cannot practise there with family or friends. Ask about suitability and availability first. Read the motorway rules.

Can I use the tuition car on test day?

Ask H&H when booking your test preparation. Car availability, suitability and any test-day charge must be agreed in advance.
